Yesterday, Canadian ultra-low-cost-carrier Lynx Air launched flights from Calgary to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Heading south for a warmer winter

Lynx Air's new flight to the Arizona capital will operate on the airline's brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft thrice weekly. Merren McArthur, Lynx's CEO, highlighted the airline's excitement about its PHX launch on a week in which the city is hosting the world's largest golf tournament and the NFL Super Bowl.

“Phoenix is a very popular holiday destination for Canadians. We are thrilled to partner with Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport, the most central airport in Phoenix, providing easy access to the city’s major attractions. Whether you are travelling to visit friends and family or to enjoy Phoenix’s year-round sunshine and world-class golf, Lynx will ensure a great flying experience at an ultra-affordable price.”

Within the last year, Lynx has launched flights to three different US cities from Calgary, clearly demonstrating the airline's success in the city. By the end of the month, the airline's monthly seat capacity will reach 5,000. According to McArthur, Lynx's ticket sales have tripled since placing all US destinations on sale.

McArthur said that a significant part of the airline's success comes from its efficient operations, which have kept its cancelation rate below 1%.

“That’s important, because we know that ultra-low-cost carriers have historically had a reputation for poor customer service, crammed old aircraft, and last-minute cancellations. Number one, our focus is always safety, obviously, but this is our second focus to get our passengers to their destination. That’s really what they want most from an airline, and that’s what we’ve been able to do.”

Lynx announced its first four US routes from Toronto to Orlando and from Calgary to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix just six months after launching operations. This month, Lynx has 76 flights scheduled to and from the United States on its 737 MAX 8s, which according to ch-aviation, have an average age of three years.

Phoenix airport news

In 2023, Simple Flying added a new feature and coverage to our website called Airport of the Month, and this month, we selected Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. We have set up a directory with PHX, including a guide to the airport, its history, flying there for the Super Bowl, top 10 routes, top 10 airlines, and more.

This week, our routes analyst James Pearson took an in-depth look at the ten busiest routes from the Arizona capital. Denver International Airport sits at the #1 spot with an average of 26 daily departures, served by four airlines. Seattle and Las Vegas each see 20 daily flights from Phoenix.
