United Airlines plans to use widebody aircraft on 34 domestic routes this summer, which kicks off on March 26th for airlines in the Northern Hemisphere. It has an average of 65 daily flights (both ways combined), according to the latest Cirium data. They include a new 777-200 service between Washington Dulles and San Diego. In response to Alaska adding Dulles-San Diego, United has increased flights to four daily in the peak summer, including this widebody, a frequency last seen 13 years ago. And it hasn't used a widebody before.

United's plans: a summary

The following map shows United's planned domestic widebody routes, including Guam and San Juan, both US territories. A handful of routes have very few summer flights. For example, Newark to Kahului has the 767-300ER on April 1st, 8th, and 15th before ending for the season. Los Angeles-Denver, meanwhile, sees the 777-200 daily between May 5th and June 1st before ceasing.

The 777-200 rules

Analysis of the Star Alliance member's summer schedule reveals that United has planned 14,057 domestic widebody flights this summer (both ways combined). While all of its twin-aisle types/variants will fly within the US, 6 in 10 flights are by the 777-200, as summarized below:

Domestic routes with double daily plus

With nearly a fifth of domestic widebodies, Newark has more than any other airport, according to Cirium data. This is heavily influenced by Newark-San Francisco and Newark-Los Angeles occupying the top two routes spots. Note that this table is based on routes with two or more daily flights:
