The European carrier World2Fly has received authorization to launch flights to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic. This new route will be operated with the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

A new route from World2Fly

Portugal’s World2Fly received authorization this month to launch a new transatlantic route departing from Lisbon International Airport (LIS). It will reach Punta Cana international starting on March 2023.

This would not be the first time World2Fly operates this route. According to the Dominican Republic’s Civil Aviation Board (JAC, in Spanish), the Portuguese carrier operated charter flights between these two cities between January and November 2022, carrying 23,449 passengers in 66 round flights.

While the Dominican Board did not specify how many frequencies World2Fly will operate on this route, it is more likely to serve this route twice a week. World2Fly will employ its Airbus A330-300 aircraft, with a capacity for 388 seats, and will offer 40,352 yearly seats, said the Dominican government.

Who’s World2Fly?

World2Fly is a leisure-oriented carrier launched in 2021. It is owned by the Spanish touristic group Iberostar and has two branches, one in Spain and one in Portugal. The Spanish airline operates two Airbus A350-900 aircraft, and the Portuguese branch operates a single Airbus A330-300.

The airline’s A350-900 has the capacity to carry 432 passengers in a single class with a 3-3-3 seat configuration. Meanwhile, the A330-300 can seat 388 passengers in a 2-4-2 configuration, according to the airline’s website. At the end of the aircraft, there is a weird configuration that includes three routes with 2-3-2 seats, one with 3-2, and two 3-seat rows exclusively. The company’s two A350-900s are new. Their registrations are EC-NTB and EC-NOI and were delivered directly by Airbus to the company. They are owned by Air Lease Corporation.

World2Fly Portugal’s Airbus A330-300 has a registration CS-WFP. This plane was delivered in March 2010 to Orbest. In 2013 it went to Air Europa, who operated the widebody between 2013 and 2021.

World2Fly Spain currently operates 18 weekly flights, according to data from Cirium. This company flies from Madrid to four Caribbean destinations, Cancun International (CUN), Havana International (HAV), Punta Cana International (PUJ), and Santo Domingo International (SDQ). The route Madrid-Havana has the largest amount of weekly flights, with three. The other three routes only have two weekly services.

The connectivity between Spain and Portugal and the Caribbean

According to data from Cirium, there are 45 weekly flights between Spain and Portugal and the Caribbean. Five airlines operate in these markets, World2Fly, Cubana de Aviación, Iberojet, Iberia, and Air Europa.

Cubana de Aviación flies from Havana and Santiago de Cuba to Madrid, one flight per week. Iberojet flies from Madrid to Punta Cana, Havana, and Santiago de Cuba, offering four weekly flights. Iberia flies to Havana, Santo Domingo, and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Spanish flag carrier operate four weekly flights to Havana and San Juan and daily to Santo Domingo. Finally, Air Europa operates services to Havana, Punta Cana, and Santo Domingo, offering seven, three, and seven weekly flights, respectively.
